Matoto: one lane of the airport road reopens after three months of resurfacing
A first lane of the road linking Matoto to Conakry's international airport reopened to traffic this Monday, after about three months of resurfacing work on a roadway badly damaged by the last rainy season. The second lane is due to reopen in the coming weeks, according to the Ministry of Public Works.
This road, used daily by thousands of people including travellers heading to the airport, had deteriorated rapidly, with numerous potholes causing several traffic incidents in recent months. Residents had been calling for action since the start of the year.
This Monday morning, traffic remained slow because of the alternating single-lane system set up while the second lane is finished, with jams reported at peak hours. Taxi drivers serving the airport say journey times are still fifteen to twenty minutes longer than usual.
What the creator verified this Monday: one lane effectively reopened, and alternating-traffic signs present over about two kilometres. What remains to be confirmed: the exact date the second lane will reopen, still described as provisional by the ministry.
