Lakota: before the final, the captains read a pledge and commit to joining a reading club

FC Mafia beat FC Pouvoir 1-0 on Saturday at the Lakota social centre, in the final of a children's maracana tournament organised by the NGO Alphabétisation active Côte d'Ivoire.
What spectators remember is not the goal. Before kick-off, the captains of the four finalist teams read out a pledge committing them to join the town's future reading club. The tournament was explicitly used as a recruitment tool for that club.
Katchia Ollo, the NGO's president, Konan N'Dri, director of the social centre, and Ouraga Zion Bernadette, of the GNOUPALE association, ran the day.
The approach is simple and easy to repeat: draw children in through football, then enrol them in a reading activity the same day, in front of their parents. What remains to be confirmed: how many children actually join the club at the start of the school year, and how often it will meet.
